By Adam ZagorinFor the past several years, the Nautiluses built-a-bear project has drawn inspiration from a new breed of hardware maker that builds its own computer and peripherals—nautilus—using the company’s proprietary Linux distribution.
But instead of a box that you buy, the project has an entire building to work from.
This year, the company announced its new Nautlus builds—and it is using the same build platform as Google’s Chromebook Pixel and Amazon’s Fire tablet.
“Nautilus is a great place to start learning the build process, as we can use the platform to make our own tools to build our own things,” said Nautlus founder Mark Gebhart.
“As we build more, we can make them available for everyone to download and use.”
The Nautus builds are built using the Open Build System, a platform that enables users to create a variety of tools for building a computer and other hardware.
“If you’re building something for yourself, you can download and build your own toolkit from our Open Build Platform,” Gebhardt said.
“You don’t have to go through a bunch of developers or companies.”
The Open Build platform lets anyone build anything from Linux-based hardware, like computers, to open source software, like software for use with Linux-powered devices like phones, tablets, and even laptops.
And as Nautils builds have gained popularity, the open source community has grown to include a diverse range of hardware builders and developers.
The new Nauts builds come with a wide range of options.
One Nautrus builder, the Open Hardware Institute, includes both open source and commercial tools.
The organization offers a number of other tools, including a custom build-and-retrofit tool, which can be used to easily make modifications to a Nautila to help it meet specific hardware needs.
The company’s Nautlis builds also include support for hardware and software from companies like Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi 3, and Arduino.
But this year, Nautiles ownbuilt an ARM-powered smartphone, a N64 game console, and a computer that uses a Linux kernel with the open-source Raspberry Pi 2.
The company says its latest builds, which use Open Build’s Linux kernel, are also available for use on the Google Pixel, Fire, and Samsung Galaxy S7.
“We want to give everybody a chance to build anything,” said Open Hardware founder and CTO Mike Taylor.
“We want people to be able to build any hardware that they want.”
The open source-based Nautls builds, like many of their competitors, use the latest Linux kernel in the hopes that the open hardware community will provide the right tools for the right projects.
But there’s one big difference with Open Build.
“Open Build is built for developers,” Taylor said.
And it’s not built for people who want to use open source tools to make their own hardware.
Open Build, which was founded by the Open Source Hardware Institute and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has been around since 2007.
The open-sourced platform offers a set of tools that developers can use to build their own devices and software.
“It’s a good place to learn how to use Open Source,” said Gebhard.
“I think it’s the best place for anybody to learn about Open Source.”
