NEW YORK (AP) — New buildings are under construction near the site of a massive explosion that killed 29 people and left more than 100 others injured in a metal warehouse.
The Harrisburg Fire Department says a building at the site is being constructed to house the medical services department and a large-scale storage facility.
The Harrisburg County Medical Examiner’s Office said the blast occurred in a storage facility for scrap metal.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the blast was a “large, powerful explosion.”
The Harrisville Police Department says they are investigating.
The city says it is working to confirm the identities of the victims.
The blast occurred around 1:20 a.m.
ET in a warehouse near the Pennsylvania capitol.
The area is being evacuated.
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor said in a statement that the company that runs the warehouse is not being named because it is not required to do so under federal safety regulations.
The department said that it has taken measures to minimize injuries, and the company is fully cooperating with the investigation.
